One of the fishermen was a character known as the 'Destroyer'- he had damaged himself in some way by getting the bends when dynamiting and diving for fish... My father painted a series of portraits of him. He was paid to sit, and remained motionless for hours. - Katherine Swift (Gandon Editions, 1993)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oonagh was going to have a baby. It was heavy September in the Algarve. Tiresome encroachments on our ‘long planned half solitude’ at our home there had been increasing. But at last the long summer ended. Our daughter Katty departed for school in Sussex. Mr Jones opened up his English School of the Algarve for the new term. Our youngest daughter Julie was to board there. Lisbon beckoned us, rather as Moscow beckons the characters of a Chekhov play. There was the baby and there was the book. – Swift, Portuguese notebook (Gandon Editions, 1993)
